The latest edition of the BlackBerry Pearl, the 8120 brings support for T-Mobile's Hotspot @Home service, which enables you to make calls from the GSM cellular network and then seamlessly transfer them to your Wi-Fi network. The Pearl 8120 continues to offer all the communication features that you've come to expect from Blackberry smartphones, including email served up by the BlackBerry Internet Service and a full menu of messaging options (SMS, MMS, and IM). Other features include a 2.0-megapixel camera with video capture, Bluetooth for both communication headsets and stereo music streaming, MicroSD expansion, digital audio player, speakerphone, and voice-activated commands and dialing.

More than just an email companion, the Pearl 8120 also offers a media player, 2.0-megapixel camera, and Wi-Fi connectivity--compatible with T-Mobile's HotSpot @Home. T-Mobile Service
With T-Mobile HotSpot @Home service, you'll effortlessly transition between Wi-Fi calling and T-Mobile's wireless network while you talk. You can get unlimited nationwide calls over Wi-Fi--at home via your wireless router or at any U.S. T-Mobile HotSpot. You can also use the HotSpot @Home service via most open, or unsecured, wireless routers, as well as any secured wireless router for which you have access to the password from the owner. This phone is compatible with the 802.11b/g Wi-Fi standard as well as the following wireless security protocols: WEP, WPA, and WPA2. Whenever you're not using a Wi-Fi network, this phone works just like a regular mobile phone, using your Whenever Minutes under your T-Mobile voice plan.

Additionally, this mobile phone operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks and can handle high-speed data connectivity via T-Mobile's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"). This phone also includes compatibility with T-Mobile's myFaves service, which allows you to call up to five of your most common contacts--on any network, even landlines--without using any of your minutes. Learn more about myFaves from T-Mobile.

Quickly and accurately type messages thanks to the SureType enhanced predictive text typing technology. Phone Features
Weighing just 3.21 ounces and just 0.55 inches thin, the Pearl 8120 manages to fit a QWERTY keyboard onto the handset's slim frame. Each button on the keyboard shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the Pearl 8300's diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.

It sports a large 240 x 260 screen that supports over 65,000 colors--plenty of real estate to view your e-mails, Web browser content, messaging sessions, and attachments. The venerable BlackBerry trackwheel has been replaced on this model with an innovative four-way trackball placed below the screen. On the rear of the handheld, you'll find a 2.0-megapixel camera and a self portrait mirror. The handheld's MicroSD memory card slot is located inside the device, behind the battery. There's also a standard 3.5mm headset jack that can be used with the included headset, as well as a mini-USB port for data connectivity.

The Pearl 8120 features an updated visual interface and integrates a new font rendering technology that displays characters with enhanced legibility at even the smallest point sizes. The BlackBerry Browser is further improved with a new "Page View" option that displays a full web page on the screen along with a magnifying glass that allows the user to quickly and accurately point and zoom in on a specific area of the web page. It also provides quicker access to Bookmarks and History.

With BlackBerry push technology, you don't need to retrieve your e-mail. BlackBerry devices are designed to remain on and continuously connected to the wireless network, allowing you to be discreetly notified as new e-mail arrives. Support is also built-in for viewing e-mail attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, and PDF formats).

This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity, and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, audio/video remote control, and sending of vCard calendar and contact info. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. With Voice Activated Dialing (VAD), you just say the word and the 8120 can initiate a call with anyone in your contact list. Plus, you can use VAD along with the built-in speakerphone or with a Bluetooth headset for hands-free dialing.

The integrated media player allows you to create and edit playlists right on the handset. The Pearl 8120 also features a 2-megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom and enhanced flash. The new camera also supports video capture in two resolutions: 240x180 or 176x144 for sharing via MMS.

Messenger and Google Talk Productivity Tools: View and update your calendar, schedule appointments, checks your task list and more while you're on the go. What Customers Say About BlackBerry Pearl 8120 Phone, Titanium (T-Mobile):

I am often suspicious of 1-star reviews of products. And get this. Niiiiice. The email synchronization is often faulty, and results in "echo" messages repeating themselves. I'm upgrading to a Blackberry 9700, because email is still the number one priority for me on these devices, plus it has all of the power and browsing ability that I need. The device's keyboard is pathetic, and the supposedly "smart" technology that should automatically know what you are typing, will as often as not come up with s;lfkjs as your intended word instead of the not-uncommon one you were going for. But please take my word for it: the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 is a bad phone. The last warranty replacement arrived with a dead trackball.

The web browser is even worse than the keyboard -- extremely slow to load, doesn't support Java, and really I have not yet found a way to run video on this thing. And don't think I haven't given this thing a chance: I have sent the 8120 back for not one, not two, not three, but FOUR warranty replacements in the past two years. Anyway, you get the idea. If you aren't already locked into an 8120, please take my advice and RUN THE OTHER WAY.

It's hard to use, it's tiny, it's slow, and it's essentially pointless. This "smartphone" has a fair number of user-settable parameters in its menus, but there are definitely things you CANNOT change via the menus, which is annoying. It's got all that, fine. You can poke around in the menus all day and not find a way to change the keyguard code, for example. But what it DOESN'T have is RELIABILITY, and without that, it's not worth much, is it. T-Mobile REQUIRES you to buy a monthly data plan to even BUY this stupid phone, and you can only cancel your data plan after your rebate processes, so they have you on the hook for at least two months at about $25 a month. It then requires a lengthy boot-up procedure that can take up to 4 minutes or so, as the hourglass icon turns and turns and turns. This leads to me missing incoming calls, assuming that the phone is ON like all other cell phones I've ever had, but NO, this phone is fully off, sending all incoming calls to voicemail while I foolishly assume that it's ON because it was ON when I put it in my bag or pocket.

Mind you, this can be VERY ANNOYING when you have to make a call under time pressure. The key-lock feature often takes a few concerted attempts to make it work, which is also very irritating when you are on the go and have to make a quick call, such as between appointments. The plastic back panel is flimsy, and every time I bump it into a wall or a desk (not hard, mind you) or drop it on a soft carpet, and sometimes when I toss it from about 8" in the air onto the passenger seat of my car, it SHUTS OFF COMPLETELY. My Nokias, while occasionally doing annoying things like all cellphones do, NEVER misbehaved like this lame Blackberry piece of crap. This gem also occasionally hangs up on an incoming call when I pull it out of my pocket, without me even pressing the "end" button. I'd try a Palm Trio or similar, or definitely a Nokia again.

Oh, I wanted a Blackberry for a long time, with its huge memory for saving text messages, its Internet capabilities, etc. Then, of course, it has to go through the 4-minute boot-up procedure while you're fuming at it.On top of this, when I bought the phone, T-Mobile mistakenly told me they'd initiate the rebate process, but in fact I had to start it online, so I never ended up getting my damn rebate.Who cares that this phone can hook up to the Internet. My Ipod Touch can do that anywhere there's WiFi, and at work, it's totally free. Not only that, but the Blackberry web browser sucks. This is NOT a chosen function in the phone's menu, either.Sometimes, the phone will SHUT ITSELF OFF for no reason, sometimes in my pocket, or my work bag, etc. I'm NEVER going to buy a Blackberry ever again. This phone is beautiful-looking, and that's about it, and like most physical beauty, it's only skin deep. And speaking of keys, the Suretype texting feature is TOTAL CRAP.

I just hit some random key by accident (even though I pull it carefully out of my pocket like a fragile little butterfly) and it'll just reject the call. I pull it out to use it and check messages, and find that it's been off for who-the-hell-knows-how-long. It's recommendations for text entries are absurd and useless, and worse than that, the phone will sometimes switch from "Multitap," which is the normal text-entry method found on most phones, to "Suretype," by itself, in-between texts, just because it FEELS LIKE IT.This phone is EXPENSIVE, UNRELIABLE, and nothing but pure HYPE. I used to drop my Nokias on asphalt parking lots (by accident, of course) and they NEVER shut off and NEVER broke. This thing is total hype, pure and simple, and anyone who's fanatical about Blackberry's has fallen for the hype at the expense of their own reason.

My call log constantly erases. To make a long story short, the alarm function works when it wants. Some calls go directly to voicemail. I have been late to work as a result of this. Sometimes the calendar reminders do not work at all. I've done numerous hard resets a master reset and even had T-Mobile update my device with newer software and the problems continue to exist. I now have to rely on my Motorola phone which was ran over by my Nissan Armada to wake me up in the morning, Thanks a lot Blackberry.

And tech support rarely helps (because of the a55/elbow thing).I thought I hated Cingular/AT&T customer service until I switched to T Mobile. Tech support takes hours.

It takes 10 seconds for the phone to recognize that a headset is plugged it, which sucks when you're in the middle of a call. 1.0 out of 5 stars P.O.S., March 15, 2009By anonymous - See all my reviewsThe pearl is one of the, if not the worst, cell phones I have owned in 10 years.Within the first few months:-the trackball was working inconsistently-the red call-end/power button functioned only half the time-the headphone jack stopped working consistently.

God forbid you experience a real problem--half of them don't know their a55 from their elbow. Sometimes it doesn't work at all. What a P.O.S.The only pro about this phone is that the calendar and contacts sync with my Mac OS.To add insult to injury, T Mobile customer service sucks 8@.5.

They only get good reviews because they sound cheerful on the phone and act like they care. Literlly.

At least at Cingular they don't put on a compassionate facade then dispense crappy service, they just cut straight to the crappy service.

Good luck getting anything fixed under warranty. Blackberry has the arrogant mentality that they are the only game in town. I didn't buy insurance on the 8100 thinking there was a year warranty. This the charging mechanism for the device and when it goes, it is gone. I have two Blackberry devices on my plan. There are many better options and a whole lot less stress. The Blackberry USB is just poorly designed. This unit was under a year old.

Setup is a pain and almost unmanageable for a novice. They then charged me $55. The 8100 and the 8130 and both have had the USB connections break. The operating system on the blackberry is the most poorly designed I have ever seen. After being without a phone for over a month, I finally get it back NOT repaired stating customer abuse. There are 50 pages on google on the USB failing. Don't waste your money on any blackberry (even the storm). Prediction: BB=chapter 11 three years.
